What is the method of mixing paint?

We can divide the mixing process into two main categories, one is a mechanical or physical mixing method and the other is an optical mixing method, which are opposite to each other.
First category
Let's start with the most obvious and widely used mixing technique, which is physical mixing, where we apply paint to the palette, arranging the colors we imagine using.
Our first physical mixing method will be to mix paints evenly, this is the simplest way to mix paints.
We usually take two or three colors and mix them carefully on the palette before placing them in the mixing bowl and then using the brush that is proportional to the area we want to paint.
We can also mix paint intermittently, we call it unevenly mixed paint. We mix the paints a little with a palette knife, allowing the colors to appear separately and not mix evenly into a uniform color. Second category
We can also mix paints directly on the canvas, where we can make some pieces with different colors, and then dip the brush in the selected color and mix it directly on the canvas, and this is called the "Ala Prima" technique.
When you apply a new, wet coat of paint to a not dry but wet substrate, you can mix the paints evenly or leave great traces of both colors.

It is clear that the old professionals did not come up with a separate and independent method of coloring, as happened in the nineteenth century, but they sometimes used the effect of this method to emphasize the effect of liveliness or nervousness.
This is what we see in foliage photography, when looking from afar they look like vibrant foliage, but up close we see individual touches of color.
Despite the fact that the effect produced by this mixing is optical in nature it can be placed in the category of physical mixing, which distinguishes it from pure optical methods.
When doing mechanical mixing, we can add a little medium or thinner to the paint. This is optional, but it is perfectly fine to perform mechanical mixing with pure paint directly from the bowl.
